Announces two PhD positions in the discipline of tourism studies
ref.nr MIUN 2016/2365
The Department of Tourism Studies and Geography (TuG)(https://www.miun.se/en/tourism-studies-tug/) and the associated European Tourism Research Institute (ETOUR) (https://www.miun.se/en/ETOUR/) at Mid Sweden University is pleased to announce the availability of two faculty-funded PhD positions in Tourism Studies. It is anticipated that successful applicants can take up these positions from 1 March 2017.
TuG-ETOUR is one of the leading academic tourism environments in Northern Europe. It is home to the first Nordic PhD program in tourism studies established in 2008. The Department offers a rich, multidisciplinary approach to tourism studies and hosts a diverse group of scientists from a number of countries around the world. Researchers at TuG-ETOUR are currently engaged in a variety of tourism-related research efforts both within Sweden and globally.
In recent years, rapid and turbulent forces have affected destinations and the tourism sector at large in unpredictable ways. Specifically, the resilience of tourism destinations and businesses faces constant threat due to several forces including: climate change and associated human-nature interactions; geopolitics and conflict; as well as shifts in human attitudes, behavior and culture. Moreover, tourism destinations, along with various key actors commonly associated with the tourism sector (e.g., businesses, organizations, public agencies, visitors, and host communities) must navigate these challenges while also coping with disruptive societal shifts including globalization, digitalization, new media, and the emergence of the sharing economy.
These phenomena and the rapid but yet unpredictable effects they have at various scales demonstrate that new research is necessary to further comprehend how the tourism sector interacts with these challenges within the emergent resiliency and/or contemporary sustainability paradigms. Thus, the hope is that successful candidates for the advertised positions will be those who can clearly demonstrate the ability to plan, develop, and complete innovative research in the field of tourism studies.
