Mid Sweden University has an opening for a PhD student position in Media and Communication Science, focusing on Communicative Leadership Development, at the DEMICOM Research Centre, starting in the spring semester 2017.
At DEMICOM, we conduct research on democracy and communication in the digital community. The research is interdisciplinary and includes research groups and projects that integrate and deal with two research profiles:
Mediatized democracy incorporates research on production factors, content and democratic functions of news media and social media, where digital media platforms, news processes, journalistic features and the relations between media development and democratic processes are analyzed.
Democratic values of communication incorporates research on organizations’ internal and external communication that impacts co-workers and stakeholders participation and comprehension, and analyzes communicative leadership and organizational change processes, strategic political communication, crisis communication and communication for a sustainable development.
DEMICOM’s research is of strategic importance for Mid Sweden University, since it has been evaluated as nationally leading and is internationally recognized. It answers to scientific and societal needs within two profile areas. Research teams and projects are comprised of researchers from journalism, media and communication science, political science, quality management and Centre for Economic Relations within Mid Sweden University, and has important international collaboration partners.
Terms of employment
The PhD position is related to the research project “Communicative Leadership Development”. Research on Communicative Leadership has been undertaken within DEMICOM since 2010/2011based on different research interests and perspectives; this project aims to investigate the training of managers and leaders in two multinational business organizations. The project team consists of communication and quality management researchers and communication professionals from the two companies.
The duration of the position is two years, and doctoral students are expected to be primarily involved in their PhD studies. The aims of the PhD studies are to develop the ability for independent analysis and to write a licenciate thesis. Following the two years, there will be an opportunity to apply for further PhD studies leading to a Doctor of Philosophy degree, provided that funding is available. Teaching and administration at the Department of Media and Communication can be included to a maximum of 20% of a full-time position.
Qualification and assessment: In order to meet the general entry requirements, applicants must have completed a second cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
In order to meet the specific entry requirements, and to fulfil the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of media and communication, candidates should have acquired a total of 240 higher education credits, of which at least 90 at second cycle level in media and communication science, or equivalent knowledge in a subject relevant for this position.
The primary assessment criteria for the appointment of a doctoral student are the capacity to benefit from PhD studies, previous study results, and the quality of a submitted research plan related to this postion and DEMICOM’s research profiles. Terms of employment: Two-year PhD position expected to lead to a licentiate degree. This excludes time not dedicated to research studies (teaching or administration). The position may be extended to a Doctor of Philosophy degree provided that funding is available.
Starting date: As soon as possible.
Salary: In accordance with the salary recommendations for PhD students at Mid Sweden University.
