Faculty of Science, Technology and Media

The Department of Chemical Engineering is located at Campus Sundsvall. The department conducts research and education in Energy Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

The BioRem Fibre research project is aiming to develop market-adapted environmental technology to clean up fibre banks along the Västernorrland coast using bioremediation, i.e. using fungi, plants and bacteria. Fibre banks and fibre-rich sediments are contaminated with toxic heavy metals and recalcitrant organic pollutants and pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems and human and animal health. We are now looking for a postdoctoral researcher for this project. The focus of the research is to develop methods for the sustainable decontamination of fibre banks and fibre-rich sediments. The research focuses on testing different ex-situ methods in a pilot scale facility to clean heavy metals and environmental pollutants from the fibre banks so that it can then be utilised through useful products such as proteins, lipids and biofuels etc. The research also includes conducting sustainability assessments for different product alternatives.

Work tasks: 100% research. A large part of the research will be conducted in the field and primarily in the pilot scale facility at which different environmental technology solutions will be tested but theoretical evaluation of different methods from a sustainability perspective is also included in the research. You will be responsible for the operation of the pilot facility in partnership with local contractors and authorities.

Eligibility and assessment criteria: Fundamental eligibility is those who have completed a PhD in the last five years in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or Chemistry with an environmental chemistry orientation or some other way, have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge either within or outside the country. In-depth knowledge of the bioremediation of contaminated soil and water, including knowledge about how microorganisms, plants and other organisms can be used to detoxify contaminated areas will be considered a merit. Knowledge of the requirements for how to conduct sustainability assessments for methods of treatment, and products that are developed in the project is also considered a merit. In addition to good subject knowledge, great importance is attached to collaborative skills, initiative and personal aptitude for research in large and complicated projects. A brief statement of the visions and goals of the applicant in relation to the stated specified research tasks should be included in the application. The applicant should also have good aptitude in the independent writing of reports in English.
